Sutton Council’s Waste and Recycling Advisor Team Leader Maria Kampioti has won the Let’s Recycle Local Authority Recycling Champion award.
The annual Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management are designed to reward innovation, dedication, and success within the recycling and waste industries. This year’s awards took place in London’s Landmark Hotel on recently.
Maria Kampioti said:
“I’m really proud to have been recognised by Let’s Recycle. I really enjoy my work meeting and engaging with our residents and helping them save money by finding ways to reduce their food waste, as well as showing them how to recycle effectively.
“I was surprised to win the award – the competition was really strong. It’s great to see so many people across the country – not just in Sutton – doing their best to improve recycling rates. But I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team, who work so hard, and my manager Amy Harris.”
Maria’s successful campaigns in Sutton include her work on the Love Food Hate Waste food waste minimisation campaign, organising two high-profile public events in Sutton town centre that attracted over 700 visitors, as well as overseeing Sutton’s Waste Less, Recycle More campaign that involved 30 recycling roadshow events and 18 recycling workshops.
Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environments and Neighbourhoods Committee at Sutton Council, said:
“I’ve had the privilege to attend some of the events which Maria and her team have worked so hard on and it’s been an absolute joy to see her and the team engage with residents.
“Maria’s great work means that we are on our way toward meeting our One Planet Sutton targets. That’s great news for everyone who lives, works, or studies in the borough.”
