Sadly, Age UK Sutton is struggling to cope with the volume of requests for this service due to lack of volunteers, meaning that over 30 older people are on a waiting list for a befriender to be found.
Toni Stead, Community Helpers Navigator at Age UK Sutton is responsible for training befrienders, she believes it’s not just the older people who benefit “our volunteer befrienders often tell me that they get as much from the programme as the older people do, just a few hours a week could bring so much joy to someone who has no one”.
Thousands of older people in Sutton are chronically lonely, going for weeks - even months - without speaking to another person.
If you can spare some time to become a befriender for older people in Sutton, please get in touch.
