Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP) and eight primary schools from Sutton have worked together to launch ‘Christmas Cracker Smile!’, a brand new Christmas campaign aimed at raising awareness and helping others by involving the community. Staff from SHP nominated over 140 of their residents that they believed deserved a ‘pat on the back’ or ‘just a little something to make them feel good’, for their good work in the community and for being a good neighbour, or for those who were without family or friends at Christmas time. Children from Rushy Meadow, Abbey Primary, Hackbridge Primary, Green Wrythe Primary, Cheam Park Farm Junior, St Dunstans Cheam C of E Primary, Westbourne Primary and Holy Trinity C of E Junior School, gathered at the Salvation Army Community Centre in Sutton to hand out presents to all those residents who had been chosen to receive a gift. Emma Pearson, Community Development Officer at Sutton Housing Partnership, said, “What an absolutely fantastic morning we have all had! The schools were very excited to be taking part in this festive campaign, and it was also a fantastic opportunity for the children to do something special for some of the residents in Sutton. This can be a difficult and lonely time for some, and this event was a great opportunity for children to help others to crack’a’smile!” School children with staff from SHP, including Andrew Taylor, Chief Executive, Sutton Housing Partnership Sutton Mencap is looking for reliable and enthusiastic people who have at least one years’ experience in working with children/young people and have a keen interest and passion in supporting people with learning disabilities for the positions of Play Workers for Children/Young People with Disabilities.

Voices from the Frontline is an innovative new programme aimed at shining a light on women at the front of the fight for gender equality. Supporting charitable advocacy work, Voices from the Frontline will increase the skills, capacity and credibility of women who wish to challenge gender inequality and promote awareness and change, moving us closer to social justice and equality for women in the UK.
We can make change happen faster, but to do that women’s organisations need more resources to advocate at local and national levels. They need the skills, confidence and connections to influence the change they want to see, and which all of us can benefit from. Voices from the Frontline, launched on 11th November 2015 and closing 11th January 2016, will invest in UK women’s projects, connect women with each other and gather and share intelligence about what works. The sort of work which might be supported includes coaching for a service user to speak at an event, lobbying for training to support organisational advocacy strategies, or the creation of campaign materials, such as posters and videos. Details Rosa is a charitable fund set up to support initiatives that benefit women and girls in the UK. Because, while many women and girls here do enjoy freedom of choice and the opportunity for success in their lives, that’s simply not true for all. Councillor Holly Ramsey has raised the issue of plans to refurbish and expand Chegworth Nursing Home 23 Downside, Cheam. In a statement on her website she says: " To note, no-one is objecting to residents of the nursing home getting nice new refurbished rooms, the home is dated and it needs to be modernised. However, we would at least expect a compromise from the applicant for putting residents through a third year of work and for the applicant to do the right thing and tidy up the building site and remove the ancillary buildings immediately. They should be coming down now that the new build is finished, but they are still up, and at a recent planning committee meeting the applicant refused to agree to take the ancillary buildings down, which would free up the garden space and make the site more aesthetically pleasing for everyone. "This is at least what all residents deserve after having put up with the constant expansion, noise, disturbance and mess….but it doesn’t seem the applicant is willing to engage. I would have hoped for Sutton Council to have done more on this issue, as well as members of the Planning Committee pushing the applicant to make more leeway to compromise with residents, but to my disappointment that hasn’t been the case so far. "Myself, along with residents have not given up yet and we will keep fighting for a better deal." Councillor Ramsey has outlined her concerns fully on her blog PLANNING Sutton Community Farm has launched Grow Beer Sutton, a community hop-growing project.
