Sutton's Mayor Councillor Richard Clifton has issued the following statement following the death of former councillor and Mayor John Dodwell.
The Mayor of Sutton, Cllr Richard Clifton, said: “I am sorry to inform you of the sad news that former councillor and Mayor John Dodwell has passed away after a short illness. “John was a civil engineer who devoted most of his retirement years to community service in the London Borough of Sutton. He served for 12 years as ward councillor for Wallington North from 1994 to 2006 and was Mayor of Sutton in 2002-03. Would you like to take part in a volunteering pilot project? With a growing awareness of the health benefits of volunteering, Volunteer Centre Sutton (VCS) are working in partnership with Merton & Sutton Clinical Commissioning Groups (M&SCCG) to pilot an innovative ‘Prescribed Volunteering’ initiative. Studies have shown that volunteering has a positive effect on health and wellbeing and makes people happier. We would like to understand more about the impact that volunteering may have on a person’s wellbeing. oA Wallington based group is hosting a special event on Friday 14th October to celebrate International Older People's Day. The group was set up just over a year ago by local volunteers to try and address loneliness and isolation in Older people. Wallington South Ward has the second highest numbers of people living alone in the Borough. A calendar of activities suitable for the age group and those with disabilities has been produced and circulated to more than 3,000 homes in Wallington. Tom Brake Wallington and Carshalton MP was at hand for another successful annual fundraiser at Iceland for Dementia Research UK. Iceland customers helped raise £500 to fight the disease. When Tom visited the store, he drew the raffle, and a £50 voucher was won by a lucky customer.
Over 850,000 people live with dementia across the UK and it is estimated 2,102 people in Sutton live with dementia, although this figure is likely to be higher. The charity is dedicated to researching the cause, cure, and how to best care for people with Dementia, a disease most common in people over the age of 65. The next meeting of the Carshalton Diabetes UK group will take place on Friday, 9 September, from 2.30 to 4pm.
The group, which meets at Diabetes Centre, Block A, 2nd Floor in St Helier Hospital, Wrythe Lane, Carshalton SM5 1AA will hear from Dr Colin Sinclaire who will talk about ‘Diabetes and Kidneys’. Meetings of the group generally take place on the 2nd Friday of the month during the day and there is bi-monthly evening meetings on Thursdays. Monthly Task Day Sunday 11th September, 10.15am Meadow Work Thursday 15th September, 10am4pm Get Active Wandle Valley, in partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation, is hosting Wandle Wheelers, an all-day family cycling event on 10th September.
As part of the day, Wandle Wheelers will be riding from Wandsworth to Morden Hall Park on the day, the ride includes heritage stops and information pertaining to the history and beauty of both the River Wandle and the Wandle Trail. The route is easy going and we can provide hire bikes if necessary. Get Active Wandle Valley in partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation is launching Wandle Wheelers on Saturday 10th September.
Wandle Wheelers will kick off with a led bike ride from the River Wandle Delta to Morden Hall Park along the Wandle Trail on Saturday 10th September. The event will celebrate Wandle September and Totally Thames as well as launching Get Active Wandle Valley’s newest initiative, Wandle Wheelers.
