Trained mountain leaders will also be accompanying the team, ensuring everyone has the best time possible, despite the huge distances to cover and regardless of what the Great British summer may have in store for them.
An intrepid team of staff from Epsom and St Helier hospitals will be taking on the three peaks challenge – a colossal bid to climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales – with the aim of raising money for the Critical Care Unit at St Helier Hospital.

A fantastic open swimming opportunity is now available thanks to St Raphael's Hospice who are looking to use the event to help raise much needed funds. Open water swimming in a venue like Dorney Lake is an amazing challenge whether you are an elite or a beginner with the event featuring four distances, from 750m up to the iconic 10k ‘swimmers marathon’. Dorney Lake, with its clear water, accurate marker points and clear lines of sight provides a great place to take on your first open water swim or go for a great time in one of the longer disciplines. For more details go to HOSPICE eton Carshalton Beeches Baptist church runs a café which is fairly low cost, family friendly (with space for children to play, and toys) and with a listening ear available. Several community groups use the café.
They are looking for some extra volunteers to serve in the café, for a 2 ½ slot, once a week, fortnight or month. Training will be given. The café opens from 9.30-2pm, Wednesday to Saturday, closing (this year at least) during August. Setting up starts at 9am, and clearing up is usually finished by 2.30pm. Sutton Soup is a new community fundraising initiative for Sutton borough run by volunteers. The premise is that members of the community pay to attend a Soup event where they hear pitches from four local good causes who are looking for funding. The pitch that gets the most votes on the night takes away all the money donated on the door! So far Sutton Soup have held two successful events in St Nicholas Church, one in April when £490 went to Sutton Night Watch and another in July when Springboard's SMILE project took away £340.
The Soup team are currently inviting pitchers for their next two events to be held in the coming October and January. This is open to any person or organisation with a project that benefits Sutton residents, and that's not just the central Sutton area but the whole of the borough - pitchers from Cheam, Wallington, Carshalton and surrounds are all very welcome to apply. Details For more details go to IMPACT Thousands of photographic glass-plate negatives of Edwardian women from the early 1900s are to be conserved after Sutton Council secured a grant of £95,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Thanks to National Lottery players, the final tranche of more than 10,000 images of Edwardian women will be cleaned, digitised, researched, catalogued and made available for viewing by the public for the first time. The HLF-funded project, Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Rediscovering the Female Portraits of David Knights-Whittome, Photographer, 1904-1918, is part of the Sutton Archives project, an astonishing collection of thousands of glass-plate negatives. The Viridor team at the Beddington Farmlands are hosting two open days this summer for members of the community to safely explore the restored farmlands, operational landfill site, and energy recovery facility (ERF) construction project. Bird Watchers Paradise, in partnership with the Beddington Farmland Bird Group and MKA Ecology – Tuesday 23rd August – 10.00 & 13.00 Beddington Farmlands Walks, hosted by the Viridor Beddington Team - Sunday 11th – 10.00 & 12.00. Thousands of visitors are expected when Sutton Police Station opens its door to the public on Sunday, 18 September at 11am.
The Open Day is a great opportunity for local residents and their families to take a glimpse behind the scenes at their local police station and to talk to officers about how they are working to keep Sutton one of the safest boroughs in London. |
