Ryan Emmerson is a Level 4 business administration apprentice who started his journey with Opportunity Sutton, Sutton Council’s economic development arm, in 2014 after completing his A-Levels.
Ryan Emmerson, London Borough Apprenticeship Awards ‘Apprentice of the Year’ 2016, said:
“I would like to thank the Opportunity Sutton team and Sutton Council for taking a chance, providing me with opportunities to progress myself and for nominating me for the London Borough Apprenticeship Awards. Everyone I have met in the Council has been friendly and welcoming – from day one they have provided me with opportunities to expand my skills and allowed me to attend a wide variety of events.
“Through the Sutton Education Business Partnership I have also had the opportunity to speak to schools about the benefits of being an apprentice. I could not have wished for a better organisation and team to work with.”
Apprentices who have made a valuable contribution to local government across London were recognised at the London Borough Apprenticeship Awards at Tallow Chandlers Hall, London. The London Borough Apprenticeship Awards are run by London Councils, which represents the 32 boroughs and the City of London.
The Awards also acknowledge the work of London borough managers who have been instrumental in recruiting and developing apprentices and boroughs that have influenced their contractors and supply chains to create new apprenticeships.
Cllr Peter John OBE, London Councils’ Executive member for children, skills and employment, said:
“The London Borough Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the hard work taking place in boroughs across the capital to create a range of high quality apprenticeship opportunities and to encourage apprentices to develop their skills and experience.
“Since 2009, boroughs have created 4,834 apprenticeships via direct recruitment, an average of 690 per year, in a diverse range of fields such as waste and recycling, housing and regeneration.
“It’s important to remember that London boroughs are significant employers that deliver a wide range of services for residents and businesses. Like any forward-thinking organisation, we want to attract the brightest and best candidates to build their careers with us and within our supply chains.
“I would like to congratulate all nominated apprentices. They have clearly made their mark, excelling at tasks given to them and even helping to generate revenue and improve services. They are an inspiration to all ambitious young people in London.”
