An initiative to tackle loneliness in older men by encouraging them to join with others for table games and darts instead of watching TV home alone is being launched by Sutton South Hello - a project which offers community activities.
Supported by Sutton South Safer Neighbourhoods team, the monthly venture is being called 'Men Allowed' and starts on Wednesday, 27 January at Christ Church Hall, Christchurch Park, Sutton, between 2-4pm.

Heather Honour, Chair of Sutton South Hello, explained: "Older men often find it hard to keep active and make friends when they retire. As time goes by they can become lonely and isolated. This is miserable for them, but can also affect their physical and mental wellbeing.
"Men Allowed offers a friendly place where men can come for a relaxed afternoon in good company and play darts, cards, cribbage, dominoes, chess miniature snooker, or just have a good chat."
PC Mark Towler, of Sutton South Safer Neighbourhoods Team, commented: "Police work doesn't just involve catching criminals and deterring crime. It's also about keeping people safe and looking after older people who can become lonely, isolated and vulnerable. Sutton South Hello offer lots of fun activities and we are keen to support them in this new initiative - attended of course by our male officers!"
After their first get-together on Wednesday, 27 January, Men Allowed will meet on the last Wednesday of every month. The entrance fee of 50p includes tea or coffee and biscuits.
Christ Church Hall is where the Hello Wednesday Club meets weekly and welcomes older people who want to share friendly company.
