A 36-year-old man has been jailed for ten years for carrying out a brutal attack on a 33-year-old man who has learning difficulties after they had been part of a group who had smoked drugs for several hours at a house in Welbeck Road, Sutton on Wednesday, 1 July 2015.
Michael Mau initially said he would pay for the drugs but later demanded payment from his victim, who could only pay back some of the money.
This led to Mau becoming angry and carrying out a campaign of violence against his victim which lasted for several hours. It included burning the victim on the chest and stomach with water just boiled from a kettle and hitting him on the head with a metal bar. At one stage the victim was stripped naked and told to crawl around the floor mopping up all the water and blood.
Another group member Karl Webley, aged 28, managed to get the victim out of the house so he could get some more money. They went to the victim's mother's house in Stavordale Road, Carshalton, where Webley told the mother her son's safety could not be guaranteed unless more money was found. The victim believed he would be killed.
Whilst Webley and the victim popped out of the address, the mother called police. When Webley and the victim returned, officers arrived and arrested Webley. Mau was arrested at a later date.
During the investigation by Sutton CID, detectives captured evidence of Mau taking video images whilst torturing his victim, who suffered 10 per cent body burns.
At Croydon Crown Court, on Wednesday, 11 November, Mau, (15.03.1979), of Thornville Grove, Mitcham, and Webley (25.07.1987), of no fixed abode, were both sentenced.
Mau was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to GBH with intent. Webley was sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to blackmail.
Detective Constable Richard Huggins, of Sutton CID, who led the investigation, said: "I would like to praise the courage of the victim and the other people who came forward to give evidence during this lengthy and complex investigation. Without their support the convictions of these two males would not have been possible
