Officers from Sutton’s Safer Parks Teams took action to stop car and motorbike enthusiasts taking part in potentially dangerous vehicle stunts at an planned ‘cruise’ on the Kimpton Industrial Estate on Friday, 17 June.
Police became concerned after a website to promote the cruise encouraged drivers and riders to ‘go mental’ – a reference to stunts.
Determined to prevent anti-social behaviour and to prevent the risk of injury to participants and other road users, the promoter was contacted and asked to cancel the event.
Although the website promotion was removed, Safer Parks officers patrolled the Kimpton Estate with two 4x4 Mitsubishi Shogun police vehicles. In addition, the Borough’s CCTV van was deployed to capture vital footage and evidence for use in Court.
Officers stopped and seized a ‘stunt’ motorbike (pictured) for having no insurance and followed up this action by speaking to all drivers and riders coming onto the estate that they would be subject to robust policing. They were encouraged to send out this message to other drivers and riders likely to attend the cruise.
This led to those who attended dispersing with no further issues reported.
Sgt Gavin Weldon, of the Safer Parks Team said: “Our actions had the effect of displacing those people who turned up. We won't tolerate anti-social behaviour using motor vehicles and will use our powers to disrupt and stop such behaviour.”
