Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake and Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate, hand delivered the 500 signature petition against route 463 changes to Transport for London’s Head of Consultation, Peter Bradley across from Southwark Station recently.
The petition, organised by local residents, is against TfL’s proposed changes to route 463. TfL is considering altering the route south of Beddington so that it runs via Maldon Road, Montagu Gardens and Demesne Road (instead of along Croydon Road).
The petition showed that most people circled the “strongly oppose” option. Residents expressed concerns that the new changes would result in greatly increased noise pollution, air pollution, traffic congestion, child safety issues, parking restrictions in unsuitable residential roads, and would reduce the health and well being of residents.
Tom said: “I am pleased that TfL officially received the petition. I have high hopes of its success. We must now sit back and wait for TfL’s final decision.’’
Sutton Council has voiced its opposition to Transport for London’s proposed changes to the 463 bus route in Beddington and Wallington.
In the council’s response to the TfL consultation , Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environment and Neighbourhoods Committee, said the council considered any proposed amendment to the bus route to be “unwelcome and unwise” and asked TfL “not to proceed with this proposal”.
The TfL proposal, which would mean the 463 bus no longer served Manor Road and Croydon Road between Maldon Road and Demesne Road, has also been rejected by residents.
In the letter, Cllr Jill Whitehead said:
“Following the launch of the consultation on the proposed change to the 463 route by TfL, there has been a considerable amount of concern from residents about this proposal.
“As a consequence of the concerns of residents, the council considers that it would be unwelcome and unwise for TfL to go ahead with the service change, and therefore respectfully asks TfL not to proceed with this proposal.
“The council remains committed to working with TfL to improve bus services where ward councillors and residents consider there are clear benefits, particularly in areas most distant from bus routes.”
