As part of its ongoing, multimillion pound age and condition water mains renewal programme, Sutton and East Surrey Water (SESW) will begin the next phase of works to replace ageing mains in Victoria Road, Horley. The current three inch cast iron main, which dates back to 1889, will be replaced by a new, larger diameter high performance plastic pipe.
The works are scheduled to begin week commencing 4 July at the junction of Kings Road, progressing towards the junction of Massetts Road. This first phase of works will involve connecting customer supplies to an existing, larger diameter, water main and will require the use of two and three-way temporary traffic lights.
The second phase of works is due to begin week commencing 25 July, when SESW will begin laying approximately 140 metres of new pipe between the junctions of Massetts Road and Consort Way East. Due to the location of other utilities within the carriageway, and to carry out the work safely, this section of road will be closed for approximately six weeks. A signed diversion route, as agreed with Surrey Highways, will be in place throughout the closure. Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as normal throughout the works.
This scheme is the final part of a much larger project in the Horley area in which the company has invested a total of £1.5m over the past four years.
“The existing water main is reaching the end of it useful lifespan and we need to carry out these essential replacement works now to reduce the risk of mains failures, and to assure the security of water supplies to the area for the future,” explained SESW Project Engineer, David Plumadore. “We are aware these works may cause some local disruption, but this vital work has to take place if future water supplies are to be maintained.”
SESW apologises in advance for any inconvenience these essential works may cause and thanks road users and local residents for their co-operation. Anyone requiring further information should contact the company’s customer services team on 01737 772000 or follow @SESWater on Twitter for updates.
