Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, is pressing the Government to change the law to allow local authorities, who are currently forced to pay for the Lee Valley Regional Park, to invest in other parks, like the Wandle Valley Regional Park.
Tom is supporting local council members who no longer wish to continue subsidising the Lee Valley Regional Park. Instead, they want to use the money to provide further funding for other regional parks. Tom Brake is fighting for the choice to invest this money in the Wandle Valley Regional Park, partly-located in Sutton Borough.
Tom said, “It is no longer rational to continue to require other London boroughs to pay for the Lee Valley Regional Park. Many of my constituents have never been to the Lee Valley Regional Park. We cannot expect residents to pay for something they have not even seen. I challenge the Government to amend this legislation so we can build up a fund to invest in the Wandle Valley Regional Park.
The Wandle Valley Regional Park, part of which runs through the borough of Sutton, encompasses several local parks and green spaces, linked by the Wandle Trail. The park is currently working on restoration projects and building up its recreational facilities. Increased funding through this amendment would be useful in facilitating these activities.
