Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, is urging the Government to reverse the changes to the school admissions code, and to provide proper support to the official complaints body at the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. The school admissions code is in place to ensure admissions to schools are fair and open.
Recent government changes to the code stop groups or civil organisations outside the catchment area from lodging an objection or complaint with the Office of the Schools Adjudicator.
Recent government changes to the code stop groups or civil organisations outside the catchment area from lodging an objection or complaint with the Office of the Schools Adjudicator.
The MP is concerned that banning groups and organisations from making complaints will lead to an increase in discrimination and inappropriate applications of the code. He is recommending a revision of these changes and is calling for the Office of the Schools Adjudicator to be properly equipped with the tools and resources they need to manage these issues effectively.
Tom said, “The Government is stripping away the ability to challenge schools for breaches of the admissions code. Given that there are cases of schools in other parts of the country found guilty of discrimination and misapplications of the school admissions code, it is imperative that there are bodies capable of combating suspected violations. I urge the Government to reverse the changes to the school admissions code and ensure the Office of the Schools Adjudicator has the resources to monitor schools’ compliance with the code.”
