Last week, Tom Brake MP and local Councillors visited a number of people after flash flooding caused road closures and damage to homes in Carshalton and Wallington.
The flash flooding was caused by over a month’s worth of rain falling in under an hour.
Peterborough Road in Carshalton was badly affected for some time, with the area under some residents’ floors flooded.
In Wallington the flooding caused a Thames Water drain cover to be blown off and under the railway bridge in Wallington, despite the Council recently installing 8m soakaways in Wallington, the drainage systems failed to contain the sudden downpour.
Tom Brake said:
‘It was distressing to see some of the pictures on social media and I can understand the anxiety that the flooding will have caused local residents. That’s why local Councillors and I were keen to hear from those affected, provide some support and reassurance that this was being investigated. I am in regular touch with Sutton Council and have asked them to check, and where necessary clean, the gullies of certain affected roads more regularly, rather than on the standard borough cycle.”
