Sutton Council are providing free grit for residents and businesses during December to grit the pavements when the temperatures drop. Residents of Sutton are known for their community spirit. The provision of free grit means that there is no need to wait for gritting services and they are quickly able to grit the pavements outside their own properties.
The council can therefore prioritise keeping main routes clear and safe, enabling traffic to keep moving in case of extreme weather and facilitating emergency vehicles.
Residents are encouraged to co-ordinate with elderly or infirm neighbours and ensure they arrange adequate supplies for them. Winter is one of the most dangerous times for older people as ice and snow make the ground slippery – if you leave near a vulnerable person please enquire as to whether they need grit and if possible make the collection for them.
On Saturday 5 December, B&Q in Sutton and the Woodcote Green Garden Centre & Nurseries on Woodmansterne Lane will host the grit giveaway. B&Q’s underground car park will be open from 7am until 5pm, while Woodcote Green Garden Centre will be open between 8.30am until 5pm. The grit will be ready-bagged for convenience, and B&Q are also offering a 10% reduction on snow shovels during the day.
Kimpton Way Reuse & Recycle Centre will be open between 9am – 5pm on Saturday 12 December for residents to pick up their grit, although they will need to bring their own bags to this facility. A webcam is available at www.sutton.gov.uk/kimpton so visitors can check ahead and avoid the busiest times.
Each household or business can collect up to 10kg of grit absolutely free at a range of locations across the borough. Claimants will need to bring proof of residence in the form of a council tax bill, a business rate bill or a utility bill – if you are collecting grit for someone else please bring additional proof of residence.

Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environments & Neighbourhood Committee at Sutton Council, said:
“We know how much our residents value our free grit supply scheme. It’s really important that during this time of the year we do all we can to help keep residents safe and secure.
“Slips and falls during the winter months cost us all. Gritting paths and pavements is something that we can all do to make a contribution to our personal safety and the safety of the wider community.”
If you are elderly or disabled and currently receive an assisted bin collection, we will arrange to deliver the grit to you - please call us on 020 8770 5000.
