Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake MP and Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, have welcomed the commitment that London’s Police Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, has made to Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group at today’s London Assembly Police and Crime Committee to retain PCSOs
Sir Bernard has pledged that Police Community Support Officers will be maintained in London and that one Police Constable and one Police Community Support Officer will remain in every ward in every London Borough.
Tom Brake MP said:
“We really need a greater uniformed presence but this is still good news and a huge victory for residents and everyone who values community policing. Thank you to all the local campaigners and the 2,000 local residents who signed our petition.
“PCSOs play an invaluable role in keeping crime down. They are often the only visible police presence on our streets and they work hard to pick up local intelligence, prevent low level crime and tackle anti-social behaviour - giving Police Officers the time to tackle more serious crimes. ”
Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council said:
“We live in one of the safest borough in London. In Sutton, the council and police have a special partnership that helps keep crime down. It's a great record that would have been jeopardized if these cuts had gone ahead.
Sutton is a safer place with PCSOs out on patrol’’
